Text messaging

Text messaging lets you send short, text-based messages to any 10-digit wireless number or email address. You can also use text messaging to send short codes—typically a series of numbers or letters—to get information, enter contests, and play trivia games. And you can sign up to receive text alerts with the latest news, weather, sports, and other up-to-the-minute information.

To add, change, or remove text-messaging features for your phone, log in to My Account.

Messaging plans

Every Alltel subscriber can receive text messages on a pay-per-use basis, even if you do not subscribe to a messaging plan. Messages sent to you by Alltel are free. You are charged for other messages unless you have signed up for one of our messaging plans. For details, see Alltel Plans.

Alltel’s messaging plans let you pay either per month or per message. If you send or receive more text messages than your plan provides, you will be charged extra for each additional message.

If you have a prepaid phone, the cost of each text message is deducted from your balance unless you have signed up for one of our messaging plans or have unlimited text messaging with your prepaid plan.

Sending and receiving text messages

You can send messages to anyone who has a text-messaging-capable phone, including people whose service is provided by other wireless phone companies.

You can receive messages from anyone with a text-messaging-capable phone, access to the Internet, or an email account.

The way you send and receive text messages depends on your phone. For general troubleshooting, see troubleshooting text messages. For phone-specific help with text messages, visit Support and select your phone.

International text messaging

You can also send text messages internationally. For details, see International Text Messaging.

When you send a text message to a phone in another country, the telephone number you specify must use the following format:

011 + Country Code + City Code + Telephone Number.

For a list of country codes used for international calling, see Country Codes - PDF (111 KB).
